Prediction of average load to be consumed on the following day by a city based on its sociological customs, festivals and other related factors.
Load forecasting has been a generation-old problem with little to no possible solutions for a very long time. With the rapid advances in factors like economy, technology across the globe, load consumption has been on the rise since the very beginning. Despite there exists peak days when there is heavy power consumption due to festivals or carnivals there also exists days when the load consumed reaches its minimum in a year. Real-time power consumption rely on a collection of factors like weather parameters, trends of power usage in the recent past, human activities, land usage, population growth, load density, etc. not to mention the heuristics which specify the occasions aka festivals, hour of the day. We use data for load consumption at every minute of every day for each day for 5 years.
This obviously presents a time-series data from which the nature of consumption is analyzed. Integrating this data with weather parameters and correlating them is what sets this problem apart from the others. We use Machine Learning to learn the trend of consumption over the years. By the end of solving this project, we can have an idea to perform predictive maintenance of the power grids so that the problems of power outage, power production in excess can be controlled.
To determine the effectiveness of a marketing campaign based on census data
The effectiveness of a marketing campaign is a quantity of interest for any company or institution. There is always a need to predict the response of customers towards a product/service based on the marketing campaign that was run. Instead of using heuristic or rule-based methods to determine whether or not a customer would subscribe for a term deposit based on the marketing campaign, we have used Machine Learning algorithms to determine the same. We used a dataset of more than 1lakh observations having various attributes about the customer (like age, bank balance, education background, occupation, duration of call, etc.) for this case study.
The dataset needed to be properly processed before modeling in order to account for the various errors and inconsistencies present in the raw data. Feature selection was also important, as some of the features tend to be redundant for the task in hand. We trained different machine learning algorithms for this classification task, tuned them to improve performance, and recorded the final accuracies on the test data. We achieved over 90% accuracy for some of the models, while others didn’t turn out to be as accurate for this task.
